Hey Broadway Fans!
It’s been quite the week for Broadway. With so many well-known stars announcing their departure from various popular shows, things have started to feel a little too depressing. It seems like we can’t go a day without hearing about another star announcing the end of their run. So instead of focusing on the negative, we decided we’d take a look at the positives of these situations- what these amazing stars have brought to Broadway, and where we might be able to find them performing next!
1) Christian Borle- Leaving Something Rotten on July 16th
Borle, who received a 2015 Tony Award for his role of The Bard in Something Rotten, will play his final performance at the St. James Theater this Saturday, July 16th. Will Chase will be taking over the role following his departure. Though we will miss his riveting performance as the narcissistic, bombastic and charming man we all know as William Shakespeare, he won’t be gone for long. Borle will be making his return back to Broadway in the fall with the revival of the James Lapine and William Finn musical Falsettos. Borle will be leading the cast of this show in the role of Marvin. Borle will also be joined by Stephanie J Block, Andrew Rannels, Betsy Wolfe and others. Enjoy this clip of Borle showing us the Shakespeare we never knew about!
2) Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldsberry- Leaving Hamilton on July 15th and TBD
We thought it was hard to see Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phillipa Soo and Leslie Odom Jr. leave at the same time, but things were made even more difficult when their departure was quickly followed by Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldsberry. Daveed Diggs will be playing his final performance at the Richard Rodgers Theater on July 15th. The date has not been announced for when Renée Elise Goldsberry will be leaving, but it will be sometime this coming fall. Casting decisions for who will take over these roles have yet to be decided. The two actors, who were both known for their rapping skills and received Tony awards for their performances in the show, will be greatly missed. Although Ms. Goldsberry will be leaving Broadway, it has been announced that she will be starring in Altered Carbon, a Netflix-original series that is currently set for 10 episodes. Although Diggs has not announced any plans for work occurring after his run with Hamilton, you can always listen to his rapping skills by checking out his solo work, titled under the name of Clippings. Have fun watching these videos of two of our favorite Hamilton stars doing what they do best!
3) Audra McDonald- Leaving Shuffle Along on July 24th
Although the entire cast of Shuffle Along will, sadly, be leaving Broadway on the 24th, this announcement came on the heels of the a previous statement that six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald will be leaving the cast to go on maternity leave. With the departure of McDonald, a name that was a big draw for ticket sales, the show was not able to handle the hit it would take for such a sustained period of time. We will definitely miss this inventive take on the original Sissle and Blake musical of 1921 that made history. We wish the best to Audra McDonald and Will Swenson on the birth of their first child!
